The 100 Year Empire
of the Inca
A
First Comers Indigenous Webquest

|
| Introduction
|
They built their cities high in the mountains, where
the air is so thin it is difficult for outsiders to breath.
They ruled more than 1 million people, and their empire covered
more territory than any other indigenous group in the Americas.
Yet, the mighty Inca Empire lasted only 100 years!
Before the Inca fell to the
invading Spanish in 1531, they had constructed roads that
stretched for thousands of miles, built cities of massive stones,
and created an extraordinary system of government. They
developed techniques of mummification, and their medical advances
even included brain surgery.
And they collected an
enormous collection of gold! And that was partly what led to
their conquest, for when the Spaniards discovered how much gold
they had, their lust for it led them to even kill the Incan
king.

The gold is all gone now, but
there is still much to be discovered in
the mountains of Peru. Perhaps there
are more lost cites, more Inca roads, and
more mummies just waiting to be
unearthed, It is just a matter
of time.
That is where your expedition
begins! You have been accepted as an
Archaeologist Intern for the summer, and
you are traveling to Peru to learn why a
civilization that lasted less than a
century has become so famous to people all
around the world! Or, you may want
to research other civilizations nearby,
like the Moche, the Nazca, or others!
