| Introduction
|
Towering over the jungle canopy in exotic places like
Guatemala,
Mexico, Honduras and Belize are the remains of some of the most
remarkable cities that have ever been built. They are all
that is left of the great city-states of the Maya civilization.
Also
scattered throughout the jungles and
mountains of those same countries are the descendents of
the ancient Maya. Many still
dress in the same style of clothing,
practice the same customs, and speak the
same language as those of their
ancestors.
Long
before the arrival of the first Europeans,
the Maya had abandoned their great cities
and retreated into the jungles and
mountains. Why
they left their cities is a question that has sparked heated
debate among archaeologists and scholars
for years. But, there is one thing
about which they all agree. For some 3000 years, the ancient Maya
existed as one of the
most extraordinary civilizations of the
world!
